"JP" was born 29 December 1936 and is married to Annette. He graduated in medicine from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1959. A spell of 5 years on the gold mines in South Africa provided a wide experience in trauma surgery, tropical medicine and occupational medicine (obtained the Diploma in Industrial Health and completed research for his doctorate on Pyogenic Infections of the Hand). He specialised in Radiology at UCT, followed by private practice for 9 years with teaching sessions at Stellenbosch University . After returning to the UCT Faculty of Medicine he was appointed Deputy Dean 1978-89, Dean 1990-98 and Dean Emeritus 1998-2001.

Since retiring from UCT JP has been the Deputy editor of the South African Medical Journal.

JP played an active and substantial role in organised medicine in South Africa , firstly in the Medical Association of South Africa and subsequently in the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He was chairman of several committees, notably those related to medical education.

Medical interests include education and medico-political matters. Current other interests include: President of the Association of Medical Schools of Africa and Chairman of the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa. He is the manager of the PEPFAR (President's Emergency Project For AIDS Relief) Project to enhance and extend palliative care to persons with AIDS in Southern Africa.

Until receiving well earned artificial hips in 1990, he was an enthusiastic competitive squash player, representing his country in the veteran category. He now enjoys walking in the mountains of the Cape.
