The participants from the eight leading medical schools worked together with the IIME consultants - experts in assessment. The work proceeded in three groups: the MCQ Group, the OSCE Group and the Observations/Logbook Group. Each group started with a review of the assessment tools to be used in evaluation of each GMER learning objectives.

The International standard for each assessment type have been stated and administrative details for examination agreed. The blueprints for creation of MCQs items and OSCE station for GMER evaluation were developed. Each group prepared estimate of the resources necessary for implementation of examination and a timeline for completion of the preparation.

It was agreed that the examination will be held for all 7-year course (Master) students at all 8 schools in the fall of 2003. The MCQ and OSCE exam will be performed in the same time while the Observations will take place during period of 3 months before the exam. All types of the assessment and procedures will represent the international standard. The performed pilot evaluations should indicate a degree to what the graduates of participating medical schools have acquired competencies envisaged in the Global Minimum Essential Requirements. The Groups also agreed upon the additional work to be done prior to next meeting which will be hosted by Sichuan University College of Medical Sciences in Chengdu in February 2003.
