On April 7-8, the first meeting of a newly appointed Core Committee was convened at the premises of China Medical Board in New York City. Dr. Marvin Dunn chaired the Committee consisting of 13 world-renowned experts in international medical education. During the meeting, an outline of "global minimum essential requirements" of undergraduate medical programs that should prepare graduates to meet the challenges of the next century was developed. Several broad areas such as medical knowledge, clinical skills, communication, professionalism and medical ethics, population health and health care systems, medical informatics and critical evaluation and research were broadly discussed. The defined "minimum essentials" will represent only part of the content of medical curriculum since each country and medical school must address their unique health, social and cultural needs according to the motto "think globally and act locally."

The prepared draft document will now undergo a series of revisions based on detailed consultation with various experts and policy makers, educational institutions and organizations.
