This meeting brought together the previously designated representatives from the eight Chinese medical schools, along with two additional clinicians from each school, as well as international experts on assessment and representatives of the Ministries of Education and Health. In all, 53 professionals attended.  The participants worked in three groups:  Multiple Choice Examination (MCQ), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and Faculty Observations and Logbooks (OBS). After reviewing the outcomes of the Shanghai Workshop (October 2002), the participants concentrated on the detailed review of newly written items, cases and scales developed between two workshops. The MCQ group developed some new items needed for a "GMER" evaluation; the OSCE Group reviewed all of the newly written cases for the 45 OSCE stations. The Observation group completed scales development for 17 "GMER" competences. All translations from English into Mandarin were checked to ensure their correctness. All groups nearly finalized the content of the examination.

The participants of the workshop took part in the "Train-the-Trainer" sessions in order to enable their faculties to use the observation ratings and train approximately 400 teachers who will observe and rate the graduates' competences. They also observed an OSCE assessment of students' performance with the use of SP's as they are routinely performed in the West China Center of Medical Sciences.
