The presentation provided an overview of the Institute for International Medical Education's Global Minimum Essential Requirements (GMER) project. This project involved defining the minimum competencies a graduating medical student should possess, defining methods to evaluate whether a person possesses these competencies, conducting a pilot evaluation of graduating students from eight of China's best medical schools, defining international "cut points" for a student and a school's performance and providing a report to each student, to each school and to the Ministry of Education on all schools combined on areas of strengths and areas that need improvement that emerged from the examination. These reports are serving as a blueprint for revisions in the education experience to correct the weaknesses and improve medical education.
