Professor Felix Vartanian was born in 1936 in Moscow. He graduated from Moscow Medical Institute in 1960 and worked at the city hospital N21 in Moscow as a physician. In 1965, he became a chief of the department at the Institute of Psychiatry of the Academy of Medical Science of the USSR.

In 1973 he joined the World Health Organization in Geneva as a staff member in charge of the programmes on neurobiology and psychopharmacology. In 1980 he returned to Moscow and was nominated as a Vice-rector in Russian Academy of Advanced Medical Studies. At the same time he was elected as a professor in chair of the department of international health. In the capacity of Vice-rector he is in charge of research activities, international collaboration and training of the top level health administrators at the Academy.

He is the author of more then 200 publications including 8 books. Professor Vartanian has been a WHO advisor for many years, and a member of the Bureau of the European Health Committee of the Council of Europe. He is a honorary member of several international academies and societies.

Professor Vartanian is married with 2 children, a daughter and a son. All family members are medical doctors and working in the field of biomedical research.
