Dr. Raja BandaranayakeFormer/Visiting Professor, Department of AnatomyCollege of Medicine and Medical Sciences Arabian Gulf University Visiting Professor, Medical Education Gulf Medical College Ajman, United Arab Emirates Professor Bandaranayake was formerly Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy in the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences in the Arabian Gulf University. He had been in this position since the beginning of 1997. For twenty years before that he was an academic staff member in the School of Medical Education, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, where he held the position of Associate Professor and Director of Academic Programs. From 1961 to 1976 he was a faculty member in the University of Ceylon (later Sri Lanka) as an Anatomist. Professor Bandaranayake obtained his medical degree in 1959 from the University of Ceylon, his PhD in Neuroanatomy from the University of London in 1967, and subsequently a Masters degree in Medical Education from the University of Southern California. In 1991, in recognition of his contributions to its educational activities, he was elected to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Professor Bandaranayake is a consultant with international repute, having undertaken over eighty-five assignments in 26 countries for international bodies such as the World Health Organization, World Bank and World Federation for Medical Education, and on the invitation of national bodies such as ministries of health and educational institutions. He has served on many expert committees at international level in the field of medical education, and was recently selected to a Task Force of the World Federation for Medical Education to determine international standards in medical education. In recognition of his services to medical education in developing countries, he was awarded the Fred Katz Memorial Medal by the Australasian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education. He is a Past President of this Association. | |
